THE VIENNESE YOUTH ADVOCATE
On preventing extremism and promoting democracy
The remit of the Child and Youth Advocate is wide-ranging. It encompasses all children's rights issues in the field of education and extracurricular youth work. Other areas such as the protection of minors, monitoring of detention centres, prevention of violence, juvenile delinquency, crime, jurisdiction, religion and the environment also fall within the remit of the Ombudsman for Children and Youths. Another key focus of the Ombudsman for Children and Youths is the prevention of extremism and the promotion of a culture of democracy as part of the Vienna Network for Democratic Culture and Prevention. Rudolf Scholten talks to child and youth advocate Ercan Nik Nafs about the social measures used to protect children and young people from extremism in Austria.
Ercan Nik Nafs studied political science and worked in the field of youth work for many years. He has been the City of Vienna's Children and Youth Advocate since 2014.
