Ukraine Under Pressure: Trump's New Stance and Europe's Responsibility

War has been raging in Ukraine since 2014; in a steady spiral of escalation that culminated in a full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has targeted not only the territory, but also and above all the statehood, identity and viability of the sovereign nation.

There should not, indeed there cannot, be any negotiations on a ceasefire and further approaches to resolving this Russian war of aggression without the involvement of Kyiv - that had previously been the consensus in the EU, but also in the USA. Until Donald Trump took office. At the moment, however, it looks as if Trump wants to reach an agreement with Vladimir Putin on the fate of Ukraine - in case of doubt, overriding the interests of the Ukrainians. Will it come to that? What options does the government in Kyiv now have? What steps will the EU have to take to honour its commitments to Ukraine and stop Putin's grip on Western Europe? And what does all this mean for the future of Central and Eastern Europe?

The Munich-based historian of Eastern Europe and outstanding expert on Ukraine Franziska Davies, podcaster (including „Ostausschuss der Salonkommunisten“) and author (including „Offene Wunden Osteuropas“) talks to Cathrin Kahlweit about all these burning questions.
