UNITE AGAINST CORRUPTION!
A global effort against corruption
During the four years of the Trump administration in the US, multilateral cooperation and the maintenance of a system based on the rule of law and global governance, which the US and Europe had established and maintained in the world after the Second World War, were pushed to the background. Foreign policy has been reduced to a kind of agreement between political leaders based on national interests. In the complexity of the 21st century, this approach does not correspond to the challenges we face, which require more, not less, multilateralism and international co-operation. The global fight against corruption, which is closely linked to democracy, international law and human rights, provides a good starting point to examine these and other related issues.
Thomas Stelzer, Austrian diplomat with extensive multilateral experience, was appointed Dean of the International Anti-Corruption Academy IACA, based in Laxenburg near Vienna, by the Board of Governors in February 2020. The term of office is four years. Prior to this, Thomas Stelzer was Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations Office at Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation and, more recently, Ambassador to Portugal. He was also Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs at the United Nations and Secretary of the United Nations Chief Executives Board. Before joining the Foreign Service, he worked as a freelance journalist and political science researcher in Latin America.
