A compass for the future

With a great deal of curiosity and enthusiasm for human possibilities, transformation expert and bestselling author Maja Göpel takes us on a journey of discovery into our values and how they work in our society: Where do they come from, which values do we want to preserve and cherish, which ones can we draw on - and which ones sometimes even stand in our way? Which values can help us to courageously shape change and stay on course in turbulent times?

It is clear that values are an idiosyncratic thing: whether we regard freedom through social cohesion or the freedom of the individual as a guiding value characterises our perception of fairness and justice. Whether we levy added value in the form of a tax or marvel at a company's value - monetary values shape our view of what is possible and desirable. Ratings such as grades, likes and points also place us in relation to others and challenge our self-worth. Standing and status are entire reservoirs of our values - but collecting them does not always make the sum more valuable.

Which values take centre stage today? Are they ethical or economic, or something else entirely? Philipp Blom discusses these and other questions with Maja Göpel in the MQ Libelle.

Maja Göpel is a political economist, expert in sustainability policy and transformation research. The bestselling author, speaker, consultant and university lecturer combines academic work with social commitment and has received numerous awards for her work. In 2019, Maja Göpel was appointed honorary professor at the University of Lüneburg. She is the founder of “Mission Wertvoll” and Managing Director of Global Eco Transition GmbH.

Philipp Blom is a writer, historian, journalist and translator.
