What boundaries do we need?

What boundaries do we need?
Between empathy and fear - flight, migration and the future of asylum
Hanno Loewy in conversation with Gerald Knaus
„Refutes both ‚left-wing‘ and ‚right-wing‘ clichés of the migration debate.“
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
„Will this book make a difference? A lot will be gained if everyone reads it,
who want to have their say and think in the migration debate.“
Süddeutsche Zeitung
No other topic has had such an impact on European politics in recent years as the debate surrounding refugees, asylum and migration. The discussion is dominated by buzzwords, false factual claims and bogus solutions. In his book »What borders do we need?«, published by Piper in October 2020, Gerald Knaus explains what is really at stake and shows that humane borders are possible. The migration expert, whose analyses have influenced governments across Europe, explains the fundamental problems we would have to solve to achieve this and how abstract principles can be turned into policies that can be implemented by a majority. He also explains why this is difficult for many societies and why even many citizens struggle with conflicting emotions - here empathy, there fear of losing control - and how a policy that takes facts and emotions seriously is possible.
Gerald Knaus, sociologist and migration researcher, is the founding director of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) think tank. He advises governments and institutions in Europe on the topics of refugees, migration and human rights. Gerald Knaus studied philosophy, politics and international relations in Oxford, Brussels and Bologna, is a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and was an Associate Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School - John F. Kennedy School of Governance in the USA for five years. Gerald Knaus lives in Berlin.
