Democracy, oligarchy, Austrian aberrations
„One of the most astute analysts of Austrian politics.“
- Claudia Kühner, NZZ am Sonntag
„The world can't stand for much longer“, as Nestroy's famous „Comet Song“ says. Much of what was once taken for granted in democracy seems to have been abolished. We no longer know what to believe to be true. For example, the false glamour of conservative hopeful Sebastian Kurz quickly dissolved in a cloud of scandals, corruption and dubious entourage. While the multiple crises are completely unsettling the public, Kurz is effortlessly connecting with those circles around Donald Trump who would rather throw our political system overboard today than tomorrow.
In his new book, Armin Thurnher explores the situation and shows that, as always, the big end of the world is holding its little dress rehearsal in Austria. At the Kreisky Forum, he talks about this with the writer Franz Schuh.
Armin Thurnher, born 1949 in Bregenz. Co-founder, co-owner and publisher of the Viennese city newspaper Falter. Numerous awards, including the Austrian Book Trade Prize for Tolerance and the Otto Brenner Prize for his commitment to a social Europe.
