Didier Eribon

Return to Reims
Didier Eribon, French author, sociologist and philosopher, was a guest in Isolde Charim's "Democracy reloaded" series on 14 February 2017.

"Didier Eribon has achieved something that is rather rare, and not only in France: although he was born into a family of factory workers in north-east France in 1953, he is now a renowned sociologist and Foucault biographer, LGBT-activist and public intellectual. In 2009, he published the book "Retour à Reims" (Return to Reims) in France, which deals, among other things, with the question of why so few working-class children succeed in social advancement to this day. The book is both a novel and a sociological study: Eribon had had no contact with his family for years when he received the news of his father's imminent death. He returned home to find that his formerly deeply communist family had since become voters for the far-right party. Front National (FN) had become. The book has now been published in German (Edition Suhrkamp)."
