LONG LIVE THE EUROPEAN REPUBLIC!

On Saturday, 10 November 2018, the European Republic of (Theatre) Balconies was proclaimed in more than 25 countries and in 30 languages across Europe. 200 cultural institutions and citizens' groups took part in this European Balcony Project initiated by Ulrike Guerot and Robert Menasse, including the Burgtheater, the Volkstheater and the theatres in Graz and Vienna in Austria.

On the balcony of the Burgtheater in Vienna, actor Peter Simonischek read out the manifesto by Ulrike Guerot and Robert Menasse, which begins with the following words:

"It is time to realise the promise of Europe and to remember the founding idea of the European unification project. We declare all those who are in Europe at this moment to be citizens of the European Republic. We accept our responsibility for the universal legacy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and pledge to finally realise it."
