Philipp Sands: RATLINES

How Justice got politicised and what to do against it

Philipp Sands, British and French lawyer at Matrix Chambers, and Professor at University College London, is President of English PEN. A specialist in international law, he appears as counsel before many international courts and tribunals, and sits as an international arbitrator. He is the author of numerous books on international law, including Lawless World (2005) and Torture Team (2008).

His most recent book East West Street: On the Origins of Genocide and Crimes against Humanity (2016) has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 2016 Baillie Gifford Prize and the 2018 Prix Montaigne.

He is also a contributor to the Financial Times, The Guardian, London Review of Books and Vanity Fair, Sands recent work includes the BBC film My Nazi legacy: What our Fathers Did (2015, with Horst Wächter and Hans Frank) and a BBC Podcast series, The Ratline (2018, about the unexplained death of Otto Wächter).
