Nina Khrushcheva: AN UPDATE ON RUSSIA AND THE UKRAINE

How close are we to war between Russia and the Ukraine? The rhetoric of invasion, coupled with Russia´s movement of troops along the Ukrainian border is treated by the West as a reality of war preparation, argues Kreisky Forum Senior Fellow and Russia analysist Nina Khrushcheva. The tactic of threatening with sanctions against Putin – motivated by trying to deviate attention from unpleasant headlines in the US and the UK – could prove a dangerous game. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell´s announcement, in contrast, that there would not be preventative sanctions, was “heartening”. As always with Putin, there is not better option than careful diplomacy.
