THE FUTURE OF JIHADISM IN EUROPE

Thomas Hergghammer in conversation with Gudrun Harrer

After a wave of ISIS-inspired attacks in the mid-2010s, Europe witnessed a slowdown in jihadi activity. Are the recent incidents in France and Austria a sign of a renewal or merely the death throes of a movement in decline? In this conversation, Thomas Hegghammer and Gudrun Harrer will discuss the current state and future prospects of jihadism in Europe.

Thomas Hegghammer is Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Oslo. He is a Middle East specialist who has worked on militant Islamism since before 9/11. He is the author of many articles and several books on militant Islamism, including Jihad in Saudi Arabia (Cambridge, 2010), Jihadi Culture (Cambridge, 2017) and The Caravan: Abdallah Azzam and the Rise of Global Jihad (Cambridge University Press, March 2020).
