WAR WITH THE WEST

The West faces existential threats. In this “war with the West”, the West is not understood in a strict geographical sense, but as a way to describe liberal open societies, which would now include several Asian countries too. Eva Nowotny and Ian Buruma talk about the threats to liberal democracy, from authoritarian enemies inside and outside our democracies.

Ian Buruma, writer and editor; in 2017, he became editor of The New York Review of Books, but left the position in September 2018. He was the Paul W. Williams Professor of Human Rights and Journalism at Bard College from 2003 to 2017
