1968 went down as a historic year in the history of European movements. However, the year only marks the beginning, the emergence of new non-party left-wing movements, but also cultural currents that influenced the zeitgeist.
They shaped the discourse and led to social modernisation. This modernist zeitgeist was favourable to social democracy, but at the same time it was alienated from these currents and the new civil society, which it was never able to control. This affected rebellious youth movements as well as the environmental movement later on. Erwin Lanc, as Minister of the Interior at the time of the squatter movement, can tell us a lot about this.
Is a broad alliance of social progress with social democracy as a party-political force still conceivable? What would it take?
