MASS UNEMPLOYMENT, CLIMATE CRISIS, INEQUALITY
The three biggest economic policy challenges in 2021
In the last 70 years, Austria has gone from being a poorhouse to one of the most economically successful countries in Europe. We have one of the best welfare states and one of the best public infrastructures in Europe. We have everything we need to successfully tackle the three major problems of our time - mass unemployment, the climate crisis, inequality and poverty. If we want to and start immediately with fact-based and targeted policies.
In any case, the social and economic consequences of the COVID crisis are enormous. However, given Austria's high economic strength, stable social structures and favourable circumstances - such as the negative interest rates on government bonds - they can be overcome if economic policy is fact-based and invests in the future with a focus on prosperity.
