Visit by the Jordanian Foreign Minister to the Bruno Kreisky Forum

On 2 September 2026, the Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Ayman Safadi, visited the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue. His discussion with Gudrun Harrer focused on developments in the Middle East and Jordan’s role as a stabilising force and mediator in the region.

H.E. Ayman Safadi addressed Iran’s recent attacks on Jordan and other states in the region, emphasising Jordan’s right to protect its security and that of its people. At the same time, he emphasised that a sustainable solution could only be achieved through diplomatic channels – on the basis of international law, non-interference in the internal affairs of other states and good neighbourly relations.

A key focus of the discussion was the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; in particular, the continued construction of settlements, land expropriations and attacks by Israeli settlers on the Palestinian population were jeopardising stability and threatening to destroy the foundations for a two-state solution once and for all. This is a path from which the current Israeli government is increasingly straying. For Jordan, the two-state solution remains the only path to a just and lasting peace. This also echoed a key position held by Bruno Kreisky, who saw the two-state solution as a „just solution“.

For more than 70 years, Jordan and Austria have maintained close diplomatic ties, which were also shaped by Bruno Kreisky and continue to have an impact to this day. Kreisky had regarded Jordan as an important partner in the peace efforts in the Middle East as early as the 1970s. The discussion highlighted just how relevant Bruno Kreisky’s vision of a just peace and a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains to this day.

The panel discussion also attracted media coverage: Jordan’s Foreign Minister Safadi in Vienna: "It is high time to intervene in the Middle East conflict"
