Wolfgang Maderthaner

Born 1954 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, historian, archivist, deputy president of the Association for the History of the Labour Movement (VGA).

Dr. Maderthaner was Director General of the Austrian State Archives from 2012 to 2019. He is a recognised expert in European social and cultural history. His studies on the labour movement, urbanity and popular culture are considered standard works. More recent work examines neoliberal transformations and their effects on social structures – always with an interdisciplinary perspective on historical power relations, social practices and global interconnections, as well as studies on social revolutionary uprisings in the Habsburg territories from the late Middle Ages to the mid-19th century.
